Today’s guest is John Langlois, my dad! He shares with us his story, starting with the difficult school days, and healing from that, and going on to some stories of time in ministry, first at Beth Shalom, then at Clarendon Children’s Homes, and then some stories from YWAM times.

This is the first half of the interview, and next week we will have some more amazing stories of God’s faithfulness.

CEBS is the Church of England Boys Society. That, along with the GFS (Girls Friendly Society) were the youth ministries of the Anglican church back in the day.

YWAM.org and SBS is the School of Biblical Studies. We talk about that, Dad also mentions the DTS (Discipleship Training School – YWAM’s entry school) and the SoE (School of Evangelism).

In the first part of this conversation, Matt and I talk about the healing that he experienced as he sought God for answers to the questions he had about his identity. It was a long journey and sometimes very painful, but in the end, God came through.

We go on to talk about Matt’s missions experience and how God has used his administration skills to bless YWAM, both nationally and internationally. Matt talks about the critical part of being a missionary being the heart behind the work, and not necessarily the type of work you perform.

DTS is a discipleship training school – the introductory school to working in YWAM.

Luke 5:31 ‘Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.’ NIV (and similarly Matthew 9:12, Mark 2:17)

Marlene is a new friend to me and as I say in the interview I fell in love with her voice when I heard her read the prayers at church. She has worked as a Speech and Drama teacher and we talk about that work, and about her love for the performing arts. We talk about how the poetry and plays that she works with relate to our everyday lives, and how we can learn from them.

Marlene is now retired, but she finds community wherever she can, and reaches out to people in many different ways – in her own community, in the church, in the local nursing home, and through teaching in U3A.

Ruth tells us about her journey from falling in love with volcanoes to working in conflict management. It may not seem like the most obvious pathway but when you see how God puts it all together you will be impressed. As Ruth said, it’s about paying attention to who you are, and who God is.

Ruth talks about the joy of teaching others, of seeing the lightbulb come on above their heads, and especially when they are learning about the Lord, or praying for the first time. Her love for people and her love for adventure really come through in this interview.

Margie has spent a lot of her life in missions in some quite scary places. We talk about a few of the stories where she’s seen God come through, in her own life, and in the lives of her friends in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We also talk about the importance of prayer, of knowing that God is right there and speaking with you.

Margie is amazingly pragmatic and straightforward. Her faith is strong because it has been tested. Not just overseas but also in her own battle with cancer. She has so many stories to share, and after hearing these few that we had time for, I hope that she writes a book to share more with us.

Roslyn is my mum, so I really enjoyed this chance to talk with her about things that don’t necessarily come up in everyday conversation. If you’ve listened over the past thirty episodes you will have heard my mum and dad come up several times as they’ve been influential in other people’s lives. Megan (Ep 29) talks about Mum’s role in her conversion, and Matt Garvin back in episode 12 talks about their international reach, and there have been others. So I thought it was time for us to have a chat with Mum and Dad so you could meet them for yourselves. Dad’s interview will be coming soon.

Billy Graham visited Hobart on March 16th, 1959

Dad’s uncle and aunt are Tom and Anne Jewett, a couple that have had a healing ministry here in Tasmania, and beyond.
