Jenny tells us about losing her mother to breast cancer at 16 and how that affected her own journey into motherhood. From her own experiences Jenny has a heart for mothers, especially those who are feeling lost or lonely and who don’t have people to turn to. To meet this need she has started a blog and podcast that can be found at www.treasuringmothers.com.

We talk about the journey to the development of the podcast, and the long apprenticeship that God took her on, building her skills so that she is now able to reach out in this way.

We also talk about women standing alongside men, working with them to build the kingdom. Jenny encourages us not to hold back, but to use the skills that we have to do what God is calling us to do.

Today’s podcast is just me, answering the questions that I set for others. I thought it was time that I shared a bit about myself, and also that I challenged myself with the questions.

I talk about my long journey of always knowing God, but also committing myself to him at different levels.

I also talk about the various jobs I’ve had through my life, and my trials in finding a career choice that was congruent with my personality. I share about how I bring my faith into what I do now, as an author of novels as well as an author of more solid Christian books.

This is not the whole story. There are so many things that God has done in my life that I don’t share about here. But it’s a little about myself in the short time available.

Ephesians 6:18 ‘And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.’

Richard is a great friend of mine, who you will see looks at life a bit differently to many of us. This makes him so much fun to talk with. It’s also so great to talk with someone who follows God with every bit of energy that he has.

I had invited Richard and his son for dinner and then it occurred to me that we could also include a podcast interview in our evenings activities. Richard enjoyed the hamburgers (as you’ll hear), and I think he enjoyed the interview as well.

I thought I’d leave the beginning of this interview in, instead of editing the unplanned bits out. I have a list of questions on a piece of paper that I use when I interview people, and Richard found that amusing. They were questions that I had prepared earlier — he was hoping I’d have answers that I’d prepared earlier but I figured that was his job.

I think this interview is very encouraging to us all to be salt and light wherever we are, and to be prepared to follow God into whatever the ‘next thing’ is that he asks us to do.

Trigger warning: Domestic violence

Wendee is a Christian who is an author, and we spend the first fifteen minutes of this conversation chatting about what that means for her when it comes to making decisions about what she writes and does not write, how she runs her business, and behaviours that she doesn’t take part in. We talk about a ‘typical’ day in the life of an author and we talk about Wendee’s conversion story.

The rest of the interview may be harder for some people to listen to. Wendee talks in depth about the abuse and manipulation she suffered in her marriage and how God helped her to get out of the situation. I hope that it is clear that we both don’t think that all non-Christians would behave this way or that her ex-husband behaved this way only because he didn’t know Christ. I also want to make it clear that I know some very loving relationships between Christians and non-Christians.

Wendee shares her story in the hope that it will help others who might be in the same situation to be able to understand what they are going through, and to be able to come out of it. We both don’t wish to glorify the pain in any way but instead to reach out to others to help them find hope in their situation. And to find the help they need.

Ep 20 Jade – I want to help people

Why did I want to interview Jade? Because of this post that she put on Facebook:

I know not everyone on my friends list believes in Jesus.

But for those who believe in Him and who believe the Bible has weight and importance, I urge you to read the Bible as if it had the power to change the way you see life. The way you understand your own circumstances and how you see and love others.

Truth be told, I’ve been having a really tough year so far. But every time I think I’ve become too complacent for God to use me or be close to me, I find myself reaching out to read the Bible.

Along with lecturers at my Bible college, who are some the most contagiously, passionate studiers of the Bible I have ever met. I have learned more about why I need the Bible than I think I have in my entire Christian walk.

I believe that the personal, emotional, devotional, worship connection with God is so very important and is different for everyone. But the foundation and strength and security and truth and power of God’s Word is not to be passed over.

It’s taken me a long time to come to this place, and I may not necessarily feel as passionately about this tomorrow, as I do in this moment. But it will always be true. And that I am so thankful for.

I hope we can all get excited about what God has given us in the Bible. It is beautiful.

I wanted to ask Jade more about why she went to theological college and what she was thinking of doing with her life. It was a great chat and I was particularly impressed with her heart to love others, even when they are being unloving to her.

Jade and I talked about Youth With A Mission and their Discipleship Training School. You can find out more at www.ywam.org

Alphacrucis college can be found at https://www.ac.edu.au/

2 Tim 3:14–15 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Also just as an aside, the book I am reading is called Walking with God Through Pain and Suffering and it is by Timothy Keller. The church book club is reading it and you’ll find our thoughts (eventually) on a blog at https://thewordmadefleshblog.wordpress.com/
