To paraphrase The Princess Bride, ‘Attacked by pirates is good.’ Gerald’s pirate story is the reason I asked him to be part of the podcast, but of course there is so much more to his story, as he says, the pirate part is minimal.

We have a fantastic discussion about the benefits of travelling with your children, taking them to far-flung places like India, and to places on our doorstep like Papua New Guinea, and even just exploring our state and our country. Gerald says that the quantity time you spend with your family on these trips, and the contrasts between other countries and our own are priceless jewels, well worth sacrificing for.

Ep 12: Pete – from science to theology

Pete shares with us his journey to pastoring a church. I have always wondered how he got from a maths and science degree to being an ordained minister so I asked the question and got the really interesting answer including how he deals with the diversity of views in the Christian world when it comes to the big questions of life.

Pete also tells us about the importance in his life of prayer and fasting, and the overall importance of the grace of God.

1 John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched–this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.

Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (NIV)

The website for the sermon is http://www.stclementskingston.org.au/

I believe that God set up this interview by making Elly and myself bump into each other at the local shopping centre. I didn’t know Elly at all, but my husband had taught her boys in high school. He told me that Elly had an amazing story, and I could tell just from a small chat that she had a lot to share. So we made a time to do this interview, literally days before she flew to The Netherlands to see what God had next on his agenda for her. And it’s a truly amazing series of stories. It’s awesome to see what happens when you listen and act as God speaks.

This is the second part of the interview with Scott Haas. Part two jumps in with a great faith-building story about the first time the whole Haas family went to Cambodia and the big changes that came out of that.

Scotty shares about the death of his brother, about the stupid stuff he got into in his grief, and about his understanding of grace. He talks about dark secrets that stop us having a blessing and stop us being the person God wants us to be.

You can still hear the budgie chirping in the background.

Part 1 of this interview is available here: https://ruthamos.com.au/podcast/ep-15-scott-1-god-provides-again-and-again/ or you can subscribe on iTunes, Stitcher, or whatever podcatcher you use to make sure you never miss an interview.

I’ve decided take a couple of bites at this interview so that you will be able to digest all the meaty goodness contained therein. Scott has so much to share and all of it is pretty mind-blowing. So this week is part 1 where we hear about Scott’s conversion, his call to radio, and the way that God has provided for him as he has put God and family first, and money firmly in last place.

I encourage you to come back next week for the second part of the story where we hear about what Scott is doing now, how God called him into it, and also about Scott’s healing from the side-effects of some of the ‘dumb stuff’ he got into as a kid and about how God is there in the midst of great pain.

This is a great interview with Sandessa where she talks about not being where she wants to be, but trusting God in the midst of it all. And we go on to talk about the importance of training to be skilled workers for the Lord.

Sandessa has chronic pain from an RSI injury and it has affected what she can do in her life. If your life is not going according to your plan, then this is a great interview for you to listen to.

A couple of clarifications: we recorded the interview at the end of 2018, so when we talk about ‘last year’ it means 2017, and ‘this year’ is 2018. Also, Sandessa originally lived in a little town in the north east of Tasmania and she moved to Launceston to complete her high school at age 15 and then down to Hobart to go to university after that.
